ABOUTSNAKESWIKI
We believe people protect what they understand. SnakesWiki exists to replace fear and myth with clear, accurate information about the snakes we share the planet with.
What we do
We publish free species guides for snakes on every continent, with identification tips, range maps, venom facts and safety advice written for everyday readers.
Who it's for
Hikers, homeowners, parents, students, pet keepers and anyone who has ever asked "what snake is that?" Our guides use US units first, with metric alongside.
Why it matters
Many snakes are killed on sight out of fear. Most are harmless, and all play a role in controlling rodents and keeping ecosystems healthy.
HOW WE WORK
Editorial standards
Sources we trust
Every guide is built from primary and authoritative references: peer-reviewed herpetology literature, the Reptile Database, IUCN Red List, NatureServe, state wildlife agencies and the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Each article lists its sources.
Real photos only
We never use AI-generated or illustrated snakes. Every photo comes from iNaturalist and is credited to its photographer under their chosen license.
Names and taxonomy
We follow the current Reptile Database taxonomy and show both common and scientific names, since common names vary by region.
Safety content
Snakebite advice follows current guidance from the CDC, WHO and US poison control centers. It is general information, never a substitute for emergency medical care.
